Alex Lane, 16, a 1070 (Diss) Air Training Squadron air cadet sergeant from Starston, has been awarded the coveted Ralph Coles Cup for winning the annual Norfolk & Suffolk Air Training Corps (ATC) Wing shooting competition.
Scoring 87 marks out of a possible 100, she overcame determined competition from across the two counties to regain the trophy for 1070 (Diss) ATC Squadron.
At the official presentation, Alex said, "I was surprised but really pleased to get this award; I have been practicing hard and it is nice to have it pay off".
1070 (Diss) Air Training Corps Squadron Commander, Andy Pursehouse, commented that she had done extremely well, as this year's standards were very high throughout East Anglia. "Diss ATC has fought its way back to prominence in rifle shooting after the untimely death last year of our popular range instructor,
Warrant Officer Mick Sapsed. The trophy is a tribute to his enthusiastic work with cadets."
Under the watchful eye of fully qualified instructors, cadets regularly practice at their squadron's own .22mm rifle range in Diss and also at facilities at Honnington and Marham RAF stations.
